By announcement of 16.11.1936, a regional church archive office was formed in the former Mecklenburg state church, with the task maintaining the archives of the state church locally.

At the same time the position of a regional church archivist was created. The current church archive developed only since 1967 through the centralisation of the archival material from the individual areas and institutions of the regional church (previously the official archive of the Oberkirchenrat). It is responsible for church governing bodies (state synod, state bishop, church management, upper church council), state church offices and institutions, state church works and associations, specialist supervision within the framework of archive maintenance of the archives of the parishes (parish archives) and the church districts (state superintendent archives).
